• The Washtenaw Voice is a newspaper of record at Washtenaw Community College. Founded in 1967 and named for the The Village Voice the underground New York newspaper that gained fame in the turbulent 1960s Washtenaws Voice is one of the most honored community college newspapers in the nation.It publishes every other Monday throughout the academic year, 18 issues in all, circulating 3,000 copies throughout campus and the community. The newspaper employs a staff of 10 part-time students five reporter-editors, a photo editor, two graphic designers, a digital editor and an advertising and marketing manager. But it also depends on dozens of freelance contributors who provide stories, photos, graphic illustrations, cartoons, videos and other new media for its award-winning Web site (www.washtenawvoice.com).The Voice operates in much the same way as professional news outlets, giving all who participate valuable experience they can take into the workplace. The Voice is proud to say that numerous alumni in recent years have gone on to work in local media, including newspapers,annarbor.com and local news magazines like The Ann Arbor Observer.The Washtenaw Voice is produced every other week by students of Washtenaw Community College. Editorial responsibility lies with the students. The views here are not endorsed or approved by the faculty, administration or Board of Trustees of WCC.Student publications are important in establishing and maintaining an atmosphere of free and responsible discussion and in bringing matters of concern and importance to the attention of the campus community. Voice students strive for balance, fairness and integrity in their coverage of issues and events.
