• Bridge Builders (created 2009) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization supporting the Milwaukee public schools, which is focused on getting more minority students attending and graduating from college. This is done through a coordinate effort consisting of the building a college/career portfolio, personal presentation, test taking skill development and coordinated campus visits to select college campuses for students (8-12) from the Milwaukee Public School system. The organization will form partnerships with local high schools (and churches), regional (and national) universities, corporate volunteers (businesses and individuals employees), as well as other established mentoring organizations (Big Brothers and Sisters, Make a Difference Milwaukee, etc). Bridge Builders goal is to give high school students the best overall opportunity to gain admittance to institutions of higher learning, thereby improving the number of MPS students who go on to college. Then once they are in college, we will work with the students to help them stay on track for graduation.The High school graduation rate in the Milwaukee Public Schools is 41% (this number is lower for male students of color ~ 30-35%). Of this only ~45% go on to college or plan to attend college. This amounts to about 20% or 2 in 10 students planning to attend college. But how many actually do attend college?Todays students face numerous challenges, from home life issues to a changing marketplace, which is offering far less opportunities to have a career that will sustain a family without a college degree. The jobs that 10-15 years ago were available for high school drop outs and those with high diplomas are no longer available or they require a higher level of education. By reaching out to these students and showing them that there are other opportunities available to them, we hope to change the lives of a few who will change the lives of many.
