• A huge new restaurant and bar is taking shape in Alameda: Capones Speakeasy.Located in the former Wells Fargo in downtown Alameda, CA., its the brainchild of Mark J. Strachan, who also owns a local construction company. Turns out Strachan has built many a restaurant and club in the Bay Area, and thought it was time to finally try one for himself.Its always been a dream, Strachan says. And even though hes seen similar projects make good money, he says that its more for the fun.The building itself is something, and Strachan says he expects the project to cost more than $1 million by the time it opens in late August, 2014. Built in 1888, it clocks in at 7,000 square feet, with a capacity of 230, a mezzanine, exhibition kitchen, 24-foot ceilings, chandeliers, and columns. There are four vintage vaults; two are behind the bar, and one (built in 1921, 756 square feet and featuring doors that are a foot and a half thick) will be converted into a private room. The rest of the space will have more of an open floor plan, with roughly 85 seats for dining. Walls be decorated with oil paintings from artist Ian Ross.The bar will be one of the longest in the Bay Area: 72 feet, made with reused 1888 original marble from the bank and topped with mahogany.True to the name, Capones Speakeasy will be, well, a theme place. It will function as both a restaurant and as a nightlife venue. Staffers will be dressed up in zoot suits and flapper dresses.
