• hēRo3 (www.hero3models.info) is a radically new Web-based platform for building and running cost-effectiveness models & sharing them with others as interactive Web apps, either in the cloud or behind a corporate firewall. At launch, hēRo3 will support Web-based development of both Markov cohort & partitioned survival models.All calculations in hēRo3 are performed in the programming language, R, using an open-source package called HEEMOD (http://cran.r-project.org/package=heemod). What hēRo3 does is bring modern Web technology to HEEMOD--allowing modelers to easily and quickly build cost-effectiveness models in R even if they don't have any experience programming in R. hēRo3 also produces visually stunning and highly customizable output. Also, because hēRo3 will run open-source code, it will be transparent and easy to QA. Best of all, every model you build on the hēRo3 platform can run on any Web-enabled device, including smart phones and tablets.hēRo3 is designed to address a range of problems that have plagued health economics modeling in Microsoft Excel, including: (1) difficulty in spotting, tracking, and correcting programming errors; (2) limited graphics functionality, with few options for customization; (3) heavy investment in development of bespoke user interfaces;( 4) limited analytic functionality without use of additional Visual Basic code; (5) slow run times, especially for large models; (6) difficulties with version control and life-cycle model management; and (7) limited options for usage analytics and statistics.hēRo3 is slated for release later this fall.
