THE DESIGNER Katy Briscoe began her career in the jewelry industry in 1980 working for a Fort Worth jeweler while studying advertising illustration and design at TCU. After graduation Katy worked in the jewelry department of a major department store and then entered the world of high-dollar jewelry sales upon being hired by the internationally renowned Fred Joaillier of Paris. With her love and extensive knowledge of the industry, she became one of Freds top-producers became an assistant director - the youngest and only female in that position at the time. In 1985, Katy joined David Webb of New York, where she furthered her knowledge of fine jewelry and gained insight into the preferences of the world's wealthiest clients. Realizing that she wanted to create her own designs, Katy moved on to establish a home-based atelier called Chinati the Jeweler and eventually set up her full-service jewelry company in June of 1994. Katy quickly became a Houston favorite, with loyal customers who fell in love with the look and feel of her jewelry. It's no surprise they did: highly-skilled craftsmen hand-make every piece, and each stone is carefully hand chosen by the designer. The collection was picked up very early in the lines creation by Saks Fifth Avenue and through continued demand from her devoted clientele, Katy gave up the name Chinati and became Katy Briscoe Inc. in the fall of 1999. In 2011 Katy expanded into other fine jewelry stores nationwide. While on her gem buying trips, Katy fell in love with minerals in their natural state, and began to make custom lamps and decorative accessories out of natural corals and mineral specimens. These are sold for home decorative use at specialty retailers and interior design showrooms.
