- RIMPAC is the world's largest international maritime exercise and is held every two years in and around the islands of Hawaii and Southern California. The exercise provides a unique training opportunity that strengthens international maritime partnerships, enhances interoperability and improves the readiness of participating forces for a wide range of potential operations. The exercise began in 1971 and involved Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Today 26 countries participate: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, People's Republic of China, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States. They will be deploying 45 surface ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel. Participating forces exercise a wide range of capabilities demonstrating the inherent flexibility of maritime forces. These capabilities range from disaster relief and maritime security operation to sea control and complex warfighting.
