• What Is Media Literacy?Media literacy is the ability to read hidden and unhidden messages in the media. Media literacy also involves the ability to understand how media messages influence your life in a healthy and/or unhealthy way. MISSIONOur mission is to empower teens and young adults to become conscious viewers of the media, critical decision makers, and to embrace their individuality and uniqueness through media literacy and media creation.VISIONTo create new generations of confident, conscious and healthy media consumers and media makers.Incorporated in May 2011, I AM not the MEdia is a 501C3 non-profit organization founded in Charlotte, NC that has served over 6,000 teens and young adults to date. The organization strives to educate teens (ages 13-18) and young adults (ages 19-24) through outreach programs and educational events that teach media literacy. In Fall 2015, I AM not the MEdia, Inc. is launching a new initiative for media literacy clubs in middle schools and high schools around the nation. This experience will create leadership opportunities for students to become Media Literacy Advocates. It also serves as a platform for students to have a voice through media creation and to educate their peers on the importance of media safety while building self esteem, encouraging individuality and diversity acceptance, and enhancing critical decision making skills.
