- The mission of the Montana Wilderness School is to provide empowering expeditionary wilderness courses to youth that foster personal growth and cultivate a conservation ethic through connecting with remote landscapes and wild places.MWS courses are a unique opportunity for Montana teenagers 16-18 years of age to be on an expedition that offers personal challenges, hard work, and life lessons. We strongly believe that mentally and physically challenging experiences in backcountry locations add strength of character and help instill a love for the natural world, providing a multitude of experiences and skills that transfer to students lives back home long after the course is over.MWS will offer its first expeditions over the summer of 2015. There will be four different expeditions each around 21 days long and all field-based in Montana. MWS curricula will involve four different categories: 1.Technical backcountry skills BackpackingCanoeing and PackraftingBackcountry campingBackcountry cookingMountaineering and rock climbingWilderness First Aid certification through Missoula-based Aerie Backcountry Medicine. 2.Wild ecologyMontana conservation history and issuesSense of place lessons3.Character development and leadership skillsCommunicationCollaboration and community building4.
