• The mission of the Henry George School of Social Science is to promote economic and social justice according to the writings of Henry George, a 19th century American writer, politician and political economist.The Henry George School was founded in 1932 as part of a reform movement that sought to establish fundamental economic justice and sustainable prosperity for all. A principle goal of the movement was to bring about the land value tax or single tax espoused by George in his classic work Progress and Poverty. In its heyday, the Single Tax movement was large and vibrant, organizing political parties in the U.S. and Great Britain, having its candidates elected to office, and achieving public-revenue policy reformsnotably in Denmark, Australia and Taiwan. A long list of eminent people, including Winston Churchill, Sun Yat Sen, Leo Tolstoy, John Dewey and Albert Einstein, endorsed Georges proposals.Since the schools founding, tens of thousands of students have taken free courses and attended seminars in economics and social philosophy. Coming from all walks of life and all levels of academic achievement, these students gained insights into the nature of society and the practical solutions for our seemingly intractable social problems.
