- What is a credit union? Credit unions are financial institutions formed by an organized group of people with a common bond. Members of credit unions pool their assets to provide loans and other financial services to each other. In HAPO's case, we were formed by a group of non-exempt workers at the Hanford nuclear site in 1953 to provide a place to save and borrow money. HAPO is an acronym for Hanford Atomic Products Operations.At HAPO, we make banking simple for you. You deposit money at HAPO, and we loan that money out to another member. Credit unions traditionally offer lower lending rates and higher savings rates since we don't have outside stockholders to pay. The members of the credit union are the owners, so any profit made by the credit union is returned to the member-owners in the form of great rates, free or low cost services, and dividends.
