• The Direct Action and Research Training Center, Inc. (DART) is a network of justice ministry organizations that bring congregations together across racial, religious and socioeconomic lines to pursue justice in their communities. Unlike charities or direct service providers, DART organizations seek long-term, sustainable changes to systems (e.g., school system, criminal justice system, etc.). Unlike top-down, advocacy organizations, we train people affected by the problem to determine the issues that the organization acts on, and empower them to speak on their own behalf. DART organizations are also unique in their ability to exercise people-based power. DART organizations regularly turn out thousands of organized people to direct actions where solutions to community problems are negotiated with appropriate officials. Recent victories by local DART affiliates include: multi-million dollar investments in affordable housing, increased access to primary health and dental care, statewide legislation to rein in the payday loan industry, implementation of restorative justice practices in public schools, and the expansion of drug treatment programs to reduce criminal recidivism.
