• Feeding the Gulf Coast, formerly Bay Area Food Bank, serves a 24-county area spanning south Alabama, south Mississippi, and the panhandle of Florida. In 2014, the food bank distributed over 19 million pounds of food to more than 400 church pantries, soup kitchens and other nonprofit organizations throughout its service area. The food bank also operates multiple nutrition programs, including Summer Food Service, Afterschool Snack, Backpack, Disaster Relief, Community Garden, Mobile Pantry, Cooking Matters, and SNAP Outreach. In 2015, the board of directors voted to rebrand Bay Area Food Bank to Feeding the Gulf Coast. When the food bank was founded in 1981, we served only Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama. Since then we have grown to serve 24 counties across Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. Our new name better reflects our large service area, our close partnership with Feeding Americathe nations hunger relief organizationand the numerous services we offer to Gulf Coast communities: food distribution to partner church pantries, soup kitchens, and other nonprofits; disaster relief; child nutrition programs to feed at-risk youth when the school cafeteria is closed; community garden resources and workshops; cooking and nutrition classes for adults and children, and more.
