- Operation Fistula is an international effort to end obstetric fistula. You are most likely among the majority of the world who has never heard of obstetric fistula. Fistula is a childbirth-related injury that leaves women with a devastating incontinence. They are unable to stop leaking and, after losing a child, many of the women then lose their partners, families, friends and their place in society. The condition can be treated in 90% of cases with an affordable surgery that was developed 160 years ago. The truly unacceptable injustice is that 99% of women who get fistula will never have a chance at treatment. We created Operation Fistula to end this injustice.We have just completed a pilot program that tested pay-for-performance funding to the point-of-care. The pilot showed exceptional efficiency and a cost-effectiveness that put our surgical intervention in the range of vaccines. We are now scaling the results of this innovative pilot.
