• Since 1961, community members in South King County have counted on Highline College to meet their educational needs close to home. As the area has changed over the years, so have the colleges classes and programs. Today you will find comprehensive community college programs, more than 100 areas of study and four new applied bachelors degrees. Highline College, which was the first community college in King County, also welcomes students from around the globe, with more than 750 international students studying at its main campus in Des Moines, just 20 minutes south of Seattle. Close to 17,000 students attend Highline each year, making it one of the states largest institutions of higher education. It is also the most diverse in the state, with approximately 70 percent students of color. Highline has received many awards and recognition over the years. The college received a prestigious Award of Excellence from the American Association of Community Colleges for increasing diversity and social equity on campus in 2014. For the past three years (20132015), Highline has received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. It earned national recognition in 2013 as one of the top 50 community colleges in the nation from the Washington Monthly, a D.C.-based magazine, as well as one of the top 100 associate degree producers in various categories for the last three years (20132015) according to Community College Week.
