- Ashraya Initiative for Children (AIC) is a small, community-based 501(c)3 organization that is dedicated to improving the lives and shaping the futures of vulnerable children in Pune, India by advancing educational opportunities, nurturing holistic development and building healthy, empowered communities. AIC was founded in 2004 by university students Elizabeth Sholtys and Julia Neubauer-Babu. Their vision was to provide a nurturing and supportive residential home for former street children in India. In 2005, their dream was realized and the first four children joined the AIC family at a home in Pune, India. The organization has grown significantly over the last decade: today, AICs main activities are divided into four distinct yet interconnected programs: the Residential Program, the Education Outreach Program, the Health Outreach Program, and the Community Outreach Program. Each of these programs contributes towards AICs broader goal of providing opportunities, resources, and support for vulnerable slum and street children in Pune.
