• SOHs mission is to enrich the education of promising, low-income public school students in the Bronx, Washington Heights, and Harlem, prepare them for selective schools and programs, and offer guidance to their parents. SOH is a year-round, supplemental enrichment program that has served 1300 promising students since 1994. SOH:Is certified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. is housed on the campus of the Horace Mann School in Riverdale and receives a gift-in-kind of the schools facilities, but must raise funds to support its own expenses. works with the same students and families from 3rd through 12th grade -- for ten yearshelps promising students who are not being challenged in their schools and are at risk of losing their motivation to learn. hires experienced teachers from independent, parochial, and public schools to teach small classes using a stimulating curriculum, partners with 100 Bronx and upper Manhattan public schools to identify and recruit students. Average annual family income of SOH students is $60,000.Two-thirds of SOH students are the first in their families to be headed for college. Over 90% of SOH students represent minority groups:41% of students are of Hispanic origin,34% are African-American, 12% are Asian-American, 8% are white, and 6% are biracial or multiracial.
