• Vela is a company, headquartered in sunny Clearwater, Florida, that designs digital video solutions for our devoted and awesome customers all over the planet! Our company Vela is named after a constellation in the southern sky. Its name is Latin for the sails of a ship, and it was originally part of a larger constellation, the ship Argo Navis.Vela (the one on terra firma) was created 16+ years ago, as a skunkworks within the Home Shopping Network, as a bunch of studio technicians and operators, video engineers and programmers. We set out to create devices for encoding and decoding video, applying the not-yet-mature early MPEG standards. While our more cerebral engineers played an active role on the standards-defining bodies, other more grounded, impatient and daring souls amongst us decided to go ahead and create some of the world's first video compression, encoding and decoding appliances.The early products (confession: we are taking some liberties in calling them products) we came up with were a bit unstable, ungainly and bulky... but turned on and stoked our imaginations and energies to white-hot. They worked... sometimes. The rest, as you know, is history!Vela today, is a company known worldwide for its full line of solutions for digital video encoding, decoding and related applications for use by broadcast, cable, advertising, post-production, education, medical, defense, enterprise and other customers.
