Project Ocean Watch

• Project Ocean Watch is a multi-year, integrated learning initiative with a unique platform and powerful promise to inspire ocean conservation and cultivate the next generation of ocean stewardship. This ambitious mission will be accomplished via an educational sailing expedition using the 64 S/V Ocean Watch to explore the rich tapestry of life beneath the waves, how it varies from neighborhood to neighborhood within the sea, and why preserving and enhancing this rich tapestry matters to us all. The Internet of Things learning platform will provide virtual and augmented reality experiences to hundreds of thousands of students in classrooms and communities and millions of people throughout 36 countries in The Americas. These virtual crew members will be talking about what they see, interpreting data and sharing ideas. Project Ocean Watch is also partnering with MBON, the newly formed organization of world-class, highly credentialed marine scientists, agencies and networks that span from Pole to Pole around the Americas. Membership includes representative organizations from USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, and Canada. The MBON member organizations include, OBIS, The Ocean Biogeographic Information System, UNESCO, The Charles Darwin Foundation, CONICET, (The National Science and Technical Research Council in Argentina) Universidad Simon Bolivar (Venezuela), Smithsonian, USGS, GEOSS, CONNABIO (Mexico) and NOAA. Project Ocean Watch strategic partners include Google Earth/Google Ocean, The Tiffany Foundation, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, MBARI, Smithsonian, NOAA, Audubon, Fablevision, Sailors for the Sea, Seattle Aquarium, Ocean Conservancy, Conservation International, Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
