• FIES manufactures and markets BioHaven® Floating Islands for Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.A BioHaven® Floating Island mimics nature by recreating a floating island that functions as a floating treatment wetland. It can be made in any shape or size, planted with wetland vegetation, and either used as a vegetative buffer or launched into a water body. The BioHaven® Floating Island is a manmade product, manufactured in the USA, from recycled PET plastic, which is created by bonding together layers of nonwoven plastic matrix with inert marine foam. The foam provides adhesion of the layers of matrix and also adds buoyancy. The plant roots grow through the island into the water column below. As water passes through the hanging roots underneath the floating island, nutrients and pollutants in the water are removed by the plant roots. The roots provide a biological haven for the development of biofilms that contain communities of micro-organisms which aid in various treatment processes. These same nutrients provide the food source that the plants need for growth.
