    Description

    • Learning starts at birth. Eighty-five percent of brain develpment occurs between birth and age five. In Monterey County, more than 70% of children from disadvantage families begin kindergarten unprepared. Far too many NEVER catch up - leading to frustrations and struggles in later years. In fact children who are unprepared for school are: 25% more likely to drop out 60% more likley to never attend college 70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. The Read to Me Project addresses the County's problem head on and has been making progress since 2011. The Project provides training and classroom-based lending libraries of books to older elementary aged students to read aloud to their younger brothers and sisters at home. The simplicity and great value of the Project is being recognized in more and more classrooms. Demand has doubled year-over-year since inception: 876 students and siblings benefited in year 2013/14 and 2000 students and siblings in year 2014/15.
