• Canstruction® Long Island, Inc., is an all-volunteer non-profit organization formed to produce the Annual Canstruction® Long Island Design/Build competition to help feed the hungry on Long Island.Teams spend months designing colossal structures and then have 24 hours to defy expectations, logic and gravity as they build these fantastic sculptures from thousands of cans of food. Driven by the knowledge that their structures will change lives by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by filling the shelves of local food banks dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to bring their creations to life. The following day, the super-sized masterpieces are judged in a variety of categories as this unconventional art exhibit is opened to the public. The cost of admission: just one can of food. At the end of the exhibition, all cans are donated to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank.This will be the events 5th year on Long Island, and this year participants will include not only teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors and the vendors who support them, but also college student in architecture, engineering, design, and construction-related degree programs, K-12 students and community groups. In the events first 4 years, the 141,000+ cans of food raised by the participating firms and the public provided over 98,000 meals to hungry Long Islanders.
