Get Full AccessDescription
- The Arapahoe Philharmonics purpose is to provide the highest degree of musical excellence and cultural enrichment for the citizens of the Denver metropolitan area and to create educational opportunities for youth promoting an interest in classical music. Founded in 1953 by Music Director T. Gordon Parks, the Arapahoe Philharmonic (AP) is one of Colorados longest-established musical resources. Its initial purpose was to establish and maintain a symphony orchestra for the musical and cultural enrichment of the citizens of the Denver metropolitan area and to provide the highest degree of musical excellence attainable for a community orchestra based on prudent and reasonable management. Additionally, the AP was committed to creating educational opportunities for youth that promoted an interest in classical music. These concepts remain the backbone of the Arapahoe Philharmonic today. Our six-concert season includes performances of demanding music from the great classical composers. During the 2014-2015 season we will collaborate with guest violinist Andrew Sords (Sibelius Violin Concerto, masterclass for high school students) and the Cherry Creek Chorale (Beethoven Symphony No. 9). Our March concert will feature the winner of the T. Gordon Parks Collegiate Concerto Competition. The winner of our new Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr. Composition Competition will also have at least one work premiered in a concert during the season. Our annual interactive Childrens Concert in April brings 1,100 students, teachers, and parents to our performance venue. This young audience is treated to a hands-on approach of implementing the Colorado State Standards in Music Education. Our Youth Outreach includes coaching sectionals for the Continental League and Cherry Creek School District (CCSD) Honor Orchestras. These small-group experiences allow the students to work with professional musicians on style, technique, and advanced musical aspects of playing their instruments.
