Autism Touch Therapy
Get Full AccessDescription
- Of all of our basic senses, touch it the most important. Besides the health benefits of massage, there are many psychological benefits to something as simple as a hug. Now imagine a child who winces when their parent tries to touch them. And the pain of the parent who can't hug their child. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often present as being afraid of touch. In many cases, touch to them is perceived as pain and could lead to panic attacks. Alternately, under-sensitive receptors may not feel pain or temperature at all. These children need to learn safe, nurturing touch. It encourages social behavior, prevents self-isolation, and fear. It also works in conjunction with other therapies. The child is more relaxed, focused, and more receptive to others. I am a licensed massage therapist, certified in pediatric massage therapy, with a specialty in ASD. I do one-on-one sessions, group sessions, parent education, and teach self-regulation techniques.
