• WERK is a collaborative studio of passionate designers committed to creating artful, unique, site-specific, and well-crafted spaces. Led by Charles Anderson, FASLA, our studio is located on Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona.There are two distinct threads that he explores as part of every project and which also define the trajectory of the larger body of work. The first is a genuine love of nature, which is rooted in growing up in the austere and vast landscape of North Dakota. The second is a passion for the arts-particularly land art and sculpture. This love of wild landscapes and contemporary art informs his work philosophically and provides a lens through which his projects are understood. Charles is renown for crafting numerous award-winning projects based on an evolving body of work that highlights the transformative processes of urban ecological systems. This approach he calls Emo Urbanism (Ecological MOdernism) and Urbanature. Most recently this evolving approach, as genesis for conceptual design, is being called Big Nature. More than any other paradigm shift this resonates more to private practice as signature design, because meticulous concern for context will generate a design that is always unique.For more than thirty years, his experience includes an extensive record of large and complex projects completed with internationally recognized architecture firms and artists. His landmark civic projects include Metropolitan Park, a 500 acre park in Athens, Greece, the Seattle Art Museums Olympic Sculpture Park on Seattles waterfront; the Arthur Ross Terrace at the Museum of Natural History in Central Park, New York City; Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument; a two-acre urban plaza and park for the Anchorage Museum, and the International Peace Gardens at the border of Manitoba and North Dakota.
