    • The art & jewelry of Seattle based metalsmith Grace Matsumoto.Artist's Statement:Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once {s}he grows up. - Pablo PicassoMy work is looking for the balance between utilitarian & glamorous, between what is cute & what is sophisticated. I love working in organic & geometric shapes, creating clean lines with unexpected movement. I try to make jewelry that makes you smile.I work in recycled metals, sourced from Hoover & Strong Harmony Metals: a refiner whose precious metal supply is entirely recycled, in an effort to make our planet & our lives greener. As an artist & a metalsmith, I am concerned about the environmental impact of mining processes, & also about the impact that standard production processes have on my health & the health of those wearing my work. Given the growing numbers of allergies to metals like nickel, which can develop through exposure to un-plated white gold jewelry, or your new iPad, handled without a cover: I work only in silver, yellow gold, & occasionally platinum. My own sensitivities drive me to set a better standard for shop cleanliness, & organic processes.
