• RAWdance performs works which expose an intimate, honest core, the essence of our relationships and identities. The company explores the power and vulnerability of the human body through driven, visceral movement. Envisioned by co-founders Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein, RAWdance crafts pieces balancing dance with theatrical elements and athletic movement with intellectual themes.RAWdance makes technically challenging works driven by human interactions and cultural phenomena and presents them in unexpected public spaces as well as the theater. SF Weekly dubbed the company's work edgy, sexy inventive fare designed to speak to audiences. Criticaldance.com described RAWdance's recent work at Orson Restaurant as experimental work done brilliantly. The company has brought full-scale dance to art galleries, UN Plaza, Union Square, and SF's Westfield mall, among other venues. In 2010, RAWdance was honored as a finalist in SF Weekly's Masterminds Awards for its focus on alternative spaces.The company has been supported through residencies at ODC Theater, Djerassi, CounterPULSE, and Jon Sims Center. In 2010 the company was awarded a Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) award. Ryan and Wendy have been guest artists at Brown and San Francisco State Universities, and teach workshops regularly. The company has performed in Singapore, China, Chicago, IL, Providence, RI, Washington DC, and NYC's Joyce SoHo, WAX, and Spoke the Hub, as well as throughout the SF Bay Area.
