- Lyric Stage was founded in 1993 by Dr. Steven Jones with the mission of preserving and developing the American musical. The lack of a locally produced, professional musical theater in Dallas County spurred Jones to establish Lyric Stage. TheaterJones.coms Mark Lowry says Going to a Lyric show is more than just a night at the theatre, its an event. And he is correct as there is nowhere else in the world that audiences can see classic American musicals performed with full orchestras playing the original Broadway orchestrations.As Lyric Stage begins its 20th season, it continues to grow as an artistic and educational force in North Texas. In 2009, Lyric Stage opened the Lyric Stage School of Performing Arts to provide students of all ages innovative, superior quality instructor in the performing arts, taught by theatre professionals and teaching artists who encourage participation, promote creativity and foster personal growth. Lyric Stage also developed the Schmidt and Jones Awards to honor excellence in high school musical theatre. By expanding education and outreach efforts, Lyric Stage is developing audiences and artists of the future.
