- Sharing Notes connects young professional classically trained musicians with audiences who most benefit from the transformative power of intimate, interactive live music performances. We provide more than 75 live music performances each year in three Chicago-area medical facilities: La Rabida Children's Hospital, the oncology wards at Prentice Women's Hospital (part of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University), and the Cardiac Care Units at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. In our 2014-2015 season, our music served over 3,000 hospital patients and their family members. Through partnerships with educational institutions such as Roosevelt University and the Negaunee Institute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, we engage music students in experiential learning performance opportunities that allow the musicians to see first-hand the impact their music can make. Each volunteer musician with Sharing Notes is screened via an audition and interview process, then provided training, event mentorship, and feedback needed to successfully engage with their audience. In addition to serving a need for hospital patients, we also serve young professional musicians by empowering them to continue to do valuable work in their communities as they advance in their careers. Keeping with our mission of community engagement, we train our musician volunteers to make their performances fun, interactive, and always focused on serving our audience. Our musicians talk to patients, take musical requests, and react sensitively to the different situations of patients and their families, providing distraction therapy that breaks the monotony and frustrations of illness and hospital life.
