• Books Are Wings is a Rhode Island based non-profit dedicated to improving literacy by putting FREE books into the hands of children. Our organization believes that children who love to read will develop the literacy skills that they need to succeed. We are dedicated to working toward a day when all children have access to books in their homes. Rhode Islands children are at risk for literacy issues that can be carried into adulthood. Children from low-income families, ethnic minority groups, and English- language learners are at the highest risk. The Books Are Wings Book Party Program is the core of our organization. These Programs are designed to increase reading levels by fostering a love of reading through motivation and choice of book. The Book Party Program begins with community involvement through book donations. New and gently used books are collected from various locations throughout Rhode Island. Books are sorted and labeled at our facility by our trained literacy staff and volunteers. At Book Party events, children choose FREE books, put their name inside on a bookplate, and have the opportunity to take them home to keep. Events also include story time, refreshments, and fun filled crafts allowing children to associate the books they receive at the party with fun. Children will recall the fun they had when they see their books at home. This association will in turn increase the time they spend reading the book and lead to progress in reading skills.
