STEM for Her, formerly known as Women in Technology Education Foundation (WITEF), is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that empowers women and girls to change the world by providing scholarships and financial support to programs that foster interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related careers. Founded in 2003 by Women in Technology (WIT), STEM for Her received its initial seed funding from Mario Morino (Legent Corporation and Venture Philanthropy Partners) and the late John Sidgmore (UUNET/MCI WorldCom), as they recognized that a digital divide still exists between girls and boys when pursuing STEM related fields of study. Women and girls are vastly underrepresented in STEM fields despite their talent and potential to be successful in these areas. While women make up more than half the population, they account for only 24 percent of the STEM workforce. Influential organizations, like STEM for Her, are striving to bridge the gender gap to create a stronger and more globally competitive and productive workforce. By providing scholarships, mentoring, tools, speakers, and supporting school-sponsored and community-based programs, STEM for Her is able to foster technology interest in girls and young women ages 12-25. Financial support is also provided to sponsor field trips, assist with program and curriculum development, and contribute program resources for Career Days in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. to serve economically and socially disadvantaged girls. Through STEM for Hers efforts, thousands of girls and women in the metropolitan D.C. area have learned about the exciting opportunities available to them in STEM-related careers.
