• Littoral Power Systems was formed in 2014 by alternative energy industry veterans to address the problem of developing hydrokinetic power and related coastal power technologies, as well as provide renewable power assets that are deployable in remote, non-grid-connected locations. Our first project relates to tidal current energy. Tidal energy is efficient and, unlike wind, 100% predictable. In addition to oceanic installations, the systems can be deployed in flowing waterways such as near-shore tidal currents, rivers and canals without the use of dams that block natural water flows with negative ecological consequences. 1,000-ton pieces of gear requiring immense budgets and exotic equipment to install the current norm in the industry are only suitable for a very narrow swath of customers. In contrast to these behemoths, we are creating a highly modular system consisting of readily shippable parts that are affordable and easy to assemble. The turbine assemblies can be deployed in small configurations for tight waterways, or can be assembled into very large energy farms. Factoring in operations and maintenance costs, we aim to drastically reduce the levelized cost of generated electricity. Our approach enables best-in-class power density and a compact turbine field. A critical factor is ease of assembly. In order to win local installation contracts all over the world, we believe it is key that we be able to work with local installation crews who may not have sophisticated capabilities or equipment. Another critical factor is ease of maintenance: equipment is handled by typical buoy tenders and components are serviced on dry land. Lastly, the system has been conceived with the utmost view to not impairing surface vessel traffic. Many large installations poke up through the surface of the water, to allow for maintenance. In addition to posing aesthetic issues, this can pose significant navigation hazards for mariners.
