• RISE is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that handles legal matters at the intersection of domestic violence and privacy laws, such as helping people being stalked and harassed through the use of technology. RISE provides pro-bono legal services to victims and their families, as well as assistance in gaining access to other support networks and resources. These situations often begin as divorce or child custody cases in family law. RISE also provides trainings, programs, and consulting to community groups, law groups, and employers. RISE was born out of the experiences of one womans battle for help as a victim ofdomestic violence. As her abuser used technology in new and unimaginable ways, she struggled to find help. She encountered inadequate resources, inadequate laws, and a legal system skewed in favor of abusers rather than victims. Yet she always remembered the words of Maya Angelou in a poem that inspired her to keep fighting then and continues to inspire her today to fight on behalf of victims: You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, Ill rise. -Maya Angelou Ruth Schneider, Attorney licensed in Illinois and Missouri, serves as Executive Director, and our Managing Director is Jessica Schneider.
