- Montgomery Child Advocacy Project (MCAP) has served more than 4,000 child victims of abuse and neglect by providing legal, social and emotional support to the most vulnerable members of our community for the past eleven years. MCAP's trained child advocates are attorneys who dedicate their own time to offer free legal representation to children suffering from physical and sexual abuse, neglect and endangerment. MCAP advocates help victimized children to heal, working together with schools, family, and community to restore normalcy, dignity, and trust.MCAP is a unique program that is a vital part of protecting child welfare in our community. MCAP is an amazing child advocacy model that more counties need, says Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey. [MCAP's} efforts ensure the legal needs of abused and neglected children are met and never overlooked. [It is] an organization leading the way in defending the most vulnerable in our society.MCAP was formally incorporated in 2004 to provide pro bono legal services for cases involving children who are victims of abuse and/or neglect including, but not limited to, physical abuse, sexual abuse, gross neglect, medical neglect, endangerment, dependency, as well as child witnesses to serious crime. Abused and neglected children were part of the legal and social service arenas without anyone to represent their specific needs, while the perpetrator had legal representation. These children range in age from newborn to 18 years and span every socioeconomic background. Once a child has been accepted to MCAP as an appropriate referral, the child may continue to be represented by an advocate until he or she is twenty-one years old.
