• The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center conducts long-term, multidisciplinary archaeological research into the ancestral Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest. We teach the public about archaeology, history, and culture through a variety of hands-on experiences for people of all ages. The Center collaborates with American Indians to build an inclusive and accurate story of the past. The mission of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is to advance knowledge of the human experience through archaeological research, educational programs, and collaboration with American Indians. Crow Canyon continues to grow and look to the future. Our vision is to expand the sphere in which we operate, both geographically and intellectually, and show how the knowledge gained through archaeology can help build a healthier society. The Center was established in 1983 as a not-for-profit archaeological research and education institution near Cortez, Colorado. The Center's founder, Stuart Struever, a professor of anthropology at Northwestern University, believed that significant advances in our knowledge and understanding of the human past could best be accomplished by an independent, privately funded research center that involved the public in archaeological research.
