Get Full AccessDescription
- In 1907, a small group of women from Glen Ellyn recognized a need in the community for a library and formed the Glen Ellyn Library Association. These women held numerous tea parties with the goal of raising enough money to establish a subscription library. With money raised from the first tea party, the women rented a room on the second floor of the Village Hall to serve as a reading room. Subscribers were able to start using the library in May. By July, the Glen Ellyn Library Association was recognized by the Illinois Secretary of State as a legal association. Mrs. Frances Hopper contacted Mr. Andrew Carnegie in 1911, hoping to secure a grant to build a dedicated library facility, which Mr. Carnegie granted. Today, the Glen Ellyn Public Library is working to make services mobile working to meet those in need at the locations most convenient to them continuing its mission to serve the community as a vibrant center for information, learning and discovery. The Library serves a community of over 27,000 people and is located about 20 miles west of the city of Chicago.
