Description

Founding board member of this charitable and educational 501c3 that is committed to building sustainable school communities for children in underserved areas in Africa. Our goal is to aid the progress of learning using technology and environmentally-conscious methods while safeguarding the traditional teachings of cultural heritage. Seeds, tools and information are all making a difference in Ntulya, TZ - a community with very limited resources. ASH is committed to offering a hands up, not a hand-out: our workforce is using local, sustainable materials to build the school entirely by hand. There are no power tools available since there is no electricity. Aggregate is chipped from local boulders, bricks are mixed, formed, cured and fired on-site by builders who are learning new skills every day. To date we have raised over $500,000, built 14 classrooms, 10 teacher houses, composting latrines, a soccer pitch, and a well. We are now in Phase II of construction and have begun work on a community resource center, administrative offices, a kitchen, a health post/medical dispensary and houses for both a doctor and a nurse. We are also designing sustainable kitchen gardens for both the teachers housing and for the students.
