• Healwell is a non-profit agency whose mission is to improve quality of life for people affected by acute, chronic, and terminal illness through massage therapy, education, and research. Healwell was founded in 2010 by massage therapists Lauren Cates and Brenda Teal in response to the need they saw for well-trained, skilled massage therapists in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics and other places where people receive healthcare. Healwell started with just a handful of massage therapists working in a single hospital and offering a single education course and has grown significantly. We now have a team of 16 massage therapists practicing in clinical programs throughout the Washington, DC metro area and 4 instructors offering a host of courses about everything from oncology massage to ethics to clinical practice to pediatrics all over the world. We support and participate in research that examines the potential for massage therapy to measurably improve outcomes for patients through clinically sound, replicable methods. Healwell most recently partnered with Childrens National Medical Center on a Pilot Study of Massage to Improve Sleep and Fatigue in Hospitalized Adolescents with Cancer. The findings were published in the January 2016 edition of Pediatric Blood & Cancer. Our board of directors continues to grow as we work with more people who feel inspired by the way Healwell is changing healthcare.
