- Haystack is the future engine of the $4 trillion physical retail market, creating a marketplace with aggregated inventory from brick-and-mortar retailers. This enables physical retailers to fight back against the ascendant Amazon / e-commerce world, powers analytics allowing more efficient stocking and pricing, and allows shoppers to search, browse, and have anything delivered from the closest possible stores. Through Haystacks beta website and app, shoppers can currently search across every nearby stores shelves for the items they are looking to buy now, similar to Yelp but for specific product inventory. This beta currently covers all of New York City, and utilizes location-agnostic data allowing national coverage in the near future. Haystacks capabilities are built on proprietary inventory technology which combines barcode-level product data when available with coarser data from retailers without sophisticated systems. For yet-to-partner retailers, Haystack uses predictive analytics utilizing multiple data sources such as open APIs, web scraping, inventory data from current retail partners, demographic and retailer information, and extensive inventory sampling. Haystack is beginning its initial user acquisition phase after focusing on product development since late 2015, when it was founded by two Wharton MBA classmates: Ben Dean, the founding Chief Analyst of NYC Mayor Michael Bloombergs Office of Data Analytics, and Rohit Gupta, a full-stack developer and the former Head of Global Oil Product Analytics and Portfolio Manager at Citadel Investment Group. Haystack has been self-funded to this point and is raising a $900k seed stage convertible note / safe.
