National Police Gazette
Get Full AccessDescription
- Crime! Sports! Celebrities! Scandal! ... and Girls in Pink Tights! An American institution!Since 1977, the original National Police Gazette has been owned and published by a small group of professional newspapermen and history enthusiasts. The current proprietors maintain the trademark and service mark registrations of the historic newspaper established in 1845 by Enoch E. Camp and George Wilkes, which became an immediate sensation for its gritty coverage of crime news. But the Police Gazette didnt achieve its greatest popularity until the 1870s, when Irish-born publisher Richard K. Fox set out to give readers a weekly paper that offered something a little racier than the latest steamship arrivals and livestock prices.A marketing genius, Fox realized that a prosperous nation was about to go sports crazy. Not only did Fox make the Police Gazette the first newspaper with a dedicated sports section, he also promoted everything from boxing matches to oyster-shucking contests. The Police Gazette also popularized celebrity journalism, the more scandalous the better. Other publishers including Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst imitated Fox and began offering a similar mix of sensational news. The current owners have continued to publish the Police Gazette since acquiring its name and goodwill in 1977. They have also compiled a huge archive of historical sources related to this landmark in American publishing.Richard K. Fox deserves the last word. Incredibly, theres evidence that Fox understated his circulation figures, simply to make the Police Gazette a less inviting target for competitors:There Is No Other ... Our immense and steadily increasing success has inspired imitation on the part of numerous and feeble and unscrupulous publishing houses, and the public will do well to see that they are not imposed on by any of these parasites who hope to live upon our reputation. National Police Gazette, February 3, 1883.
