    Description

    • The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a new approach to networking called Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The SDN approach arose out of a six-year research collaboration between Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley. Essential to SDN is the separation of control from forwarding, which then yields a single control element governing multiple forwarding elements, a standard communication interface between the control plane and forwarding plane, and an open programming interface to the control plane for the management and customization of the network. The Open Networking Foundation champions all aspects of SDN and is the steward of the OpenFlow protocol, which links the control and forwarding planes. ONF is led by a Board of Directors consisting of eight of the world's leading network operators: Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Google, Microsoft, NTT Communications, Verizon, and Yahoo!. Membership is open to organizations of all types. A list of current members along with all published ONF specifications and a great deal of information may be found at www.opennetworking.org.
