• Because legal problems are often health problems, Cancer Legal Care's mission is to provide free legal care to Minnesotans affected by cancer who otherwise have no access to an attorney's help for the legal issues that directly impact their health and quality of life. Since October 2007, Cancer Legal Care's programs have provided over $2.4 million in free legal care to over 6,500 Minnesotans affected by cancer. A cancer diagnosis is not only medical it also threatens financial security and family stability. The provision of legal care, either as a complementary or fully integrated part of health care, is often the determining factor in ensuring that the practical challenges of cancer, namely maintaining employment, insurance, housing, and finances, don't become the derailing factor in the life of a cancer patient and their family.The social determinants of health (access to and maintaining employment, housing stability, and financial security to meet daily needs, chief among them) all have legal underpinnings, yet disproportionately impact those who are least able to afford the services of an attorney. However, until recently, legal care has been missing from the concept of comprehensive cancer care. The key to ensuring these non-medical, but health determinative, issues are resolved lies in receiving legal care at a vulnerable time. By alleviating the legal stressors faced by cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones via the provision of free legal care, they are better able to focus their energies on healing rather than an endless loop of what if and worry. The unique and complementary nature of our work along the continuum of cancer care represents a significant improvement in the lives of Minnesotans with cancer.
