• Few countries in the world have been marred by war, famine, and disease as consistently and violently as that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Between rebel groups clashing over control of precious mine fields, daily mass killings by Islamic State affiliated fighters, a deadly measles outbreak with no end in sight, or a recent Ebola epidemic that has claimed over 2000 lives, orphaned children across the region have been left with no option but to drop out of school, live on the streets, and fend for themselves. In an area riddled with war and conflict, many of these children eventually become recruited as child soldiers tools of war that are then used to perpetrate the same atrocities that turned them into orphans in the first place. Estimates suggest that 8 to 16-year-old-children make up 60% of combatants in the DRC, a fact that underscores the need for immediate intervention and relief. In order to help curb this tragedy, the recently established Fesser and Friends Center for Hope has teamed up with the locally based organization, Sowers of New Hope, to help identify and care for these high-risk children. By sending locally trained workers into school districts affected by war and Ebola, we have managed to identify hundreds of orphans that are at high risk of becoming malnourished, abused, and/or recruited as child soldiers by rebel forces. At our new center we now house, feed, love, educate, and care a dozen of the highest risk and most destitute orphans we identified. In order to ensure that everything runs smoothly the center is being directly monitored by the locally staffed and operated organization, Sowers of New Hope. These children are being given a new chance in life and there is no one to thank but you: our donors.
