- Downeast LNG is proposing to build a safe and environmentally sound LNG import terminal at Mill Cove in Robbinston, Maine, on Passamaquoddy Bay. The proposed facility will consist of two storage tanks, a re-gasification plant, a pier to receive LNG carriers, and a natural gas pipeline that will connect the facility to the existing pipeline that runs from Nova Scotia, Canada, through Maine.Despite the growth of shale gas in North America, New England will continue to be reliant upon imported LNG due to pipeline capacity constraints from southern gas supply sources. Since these pipeline constraints cannot be easily remedied, LNG is the only gas supply option that can meet incremental gas demand and replace declining offshore regional gas production from Nova Scotia. In January of 2006, the people of Robbinston voted 227 to 83 in support of the Downeast LNG project in a special town election, and the project subsequently received approval of its land use permit applications from the Robbinston Planning Board. The project is undergoing a review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and will be submitting permit applications to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in the near future.
