• My family was blessed to be there on Family day and hug our son tight. We got to spend 6 glorious hours with him. After that amazing first embrace, I looked around to see Marines standing alone, looking at their brothers getting hugs from family members, shedding tears, laughing and enjoying seeing their new Marine for the first time in 13 weeks. It hurt me to my core and my heart broke for the families that werent there to share the same joy that I felt. It was then I learned about the SAMs (Stand Alone Marines). They had just endured the toughest training in their lives, and not a single loved was able to be there to hug them and share this special day with them. I had the honor to speak with a few of the SAMs and spent time with them on family day, they shared with me that it wasn't the lack of love and support from back home, but the financial burden on their family that prevented them from being there. Some of these families live more than 2000 miles away and the cost associated with a trip for 1 or more family members is not always possible.
