• KJ Scientific is the first environmental testing biotech company in the world that focuses on using new technology to analyze chemicals (e.g., pesticides, personal care products, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, cosmetics) for bioaccumulation (i.e. accumulation in living organisms tissues) potential that may affect human and wildlife health. KJ Scientific is one of the candidate companies to participate in the next global Ring Trial using trout hepatocytes and liver S9 fractions to test various chemicals for bioaccumulation potential.We provide both services (contract studies) and products (fish liver sub-cellular fractions & hepatocytes), and utilize new and exciting alternative technology (trout in vitro metabolism assay) to determine bioaccumulation potential of chemicals.The European Commission through the REACH (Regulation, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) initiative requires chemicals to be tested for Persistency, Bioaccumulation, and Toxicity (PBT) to ensure a high level of protection to human health and the environment, and to promote alternative methods to assess hazardous substances that will reduce the number of tests on animals. Chemicals with specific characteristics and production over 1 ton per year, are required to undergo testing before going into the market.The use of this alternative method will reduce the cost of testing chemicals; decrease the number of animals used for testing and diminish the experimentation time significantly. KJ Scientific will utilize the trout in vitro metabolism biochemical assay using fish livers (Johanning et al., 2012. In: Current Protocols) to assess metabolism and determine bioaccumulation potential (i.e. BCF or Bioconcentration Factor used by regulators). Results from the in vitro metabolism test will be utilized in the in vitro to in vivo extrapolation model to generate the BCF values.
