• The Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit professional membership organization for physicians, allied health professionals, and qualified individuals who concern themselves with matters related to wilderness medicine and the health, safety, and medical care of those who work, reside, or live in remote or extreme environments. Our charter as a tax-deductible organization designates us as a public charity for the public good with a responsibility to educate and serve the public.The WMS was founded in 1983 by physicians for physicians and allied health professionals. The WMS is the world's leading organization devoted to wilderness medicine issues and their challenges.The society promotes research and outreach with its many programs. Yearly research grants are funded by the Society and awarded to young investigators at the annual meeting. The WMS encourages community involvement and public service, mentoring, and recruiting medical students by way of our many active Student Interest Groups. In addition to the Societys annual meeting, it also sponsors topic specific meetings (e.g. Winter Wilderness Medicine and Dive Medicine) and the quadrennial World Congress in Wilderness Medicine. The commitment of the WMS to embrace academic excellence and to deliver innovative services to its members shines with the inception and creation of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. You will join other professionals who share medical, conservation, and recreational interest wilderness activities. You will have a wealth of opportunities and materials for professional and personal growth, including eligibility for a Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM), continuing medical educational credits via conferences, online lectures and journal articles, the Wilderness & Environmental Medicine journal, Wilderness Medicine Magazine, and a multi-topic Educational Lecture Series for starters.
