• OUR MISSIONTo empower elementary-age girls to know who they are, what they believe, and how to advocate for themselves.OUR METHODWe go where the girls are schools, community centers, and other kid-centric venues and bring girls a slate of programs that incorporate yoga, reading, and mentoring. Individual classes span 6090 minutes, though most often, we administer classes as part of an 8-week after-school program or in-school emotional-support program. We also offer birthday parties and single-session classes for Girl Scout troops and private clients.RESEARCH BASISStudies show that girls are increasingly finding unhealthy ways to cope with the everyday stresses and gendered issues they confront. For instance, a study conducted by the American Association of University Women showed that girls receive less attention and encouragement in school than their male peers. Over time, this depreciates their sense of self-worth and perpetuates a cycle of low engagement and aversion to leadership. This yields low achievement in other arenas, such as the workplace currently, women occupy 4.8% of Fortune 500 CEO positions, and 14.6% of its executive offices. In addition to being underrepresented in leadership roles, girls are underrepresented in classroom literature. A report by Gender & Society shows that males are main characters in 57 percent of childrens books published annually, whereas only 31 percent have female main characters. Since children are socialized to fulfill the roles they see represented in media and society, girls are led to believe that they take up less space than boysor worsethat they dont belong in positions of influence.A girls sense of personhood including her appraisal of worthiness, intelligence, and influence is established during her elementary years. For this reason, Mission Propelle targets girls who fall within this highly influential stage of development.
