• For over 20 years, Perry Wilson, founder of If I Had A Hammer, has been teaching applied mathematics to elementary school-aged children. What started out as a nationwide tour of teaching kids a combination of math and life skills through building small houses, has naturally evolved into an acclaimed hands-on math curriculum for students grades 3 - 8. Hammer focuses on the Achilles Heel of mathematicsfractions and measurement. Fractions is one of the hardest concepts for children to visualize. Hammer is a unique math program because we begin by teaching math concepts firstvisually, physically, then paper applicationnot just focusing on how to get a correct answer. Not only is our online curriculum unique, we also have 2 patents on a math manipulative called The Big Inch. Invented by Perry Wilson, The Big Inch is the only math manipulative in the world that combines measurement and fractions. We believe children struggle in math today because they are taught mathematics through rote memorization. Children in the USA currently rank 25th globally in their math abilities.
