In Christ, our our relationships to birth and death change. Our relationships to marriage and worship and government change. Our relationship to adulthood should change too. Adulthood does change in Christ. But unlike birth, marriage, or government, American churches spend little time attending to it. We allowed society to define it, and we've ended up with a funny definition.And here's the rub: when twenty-somethings leave church, they do so not primarily because of dramatic conversions, but because they see Christianity fade into their childhood: a naive picture of the world. But that Christianity isn't Christ's kingdom, which contains all of life. Their rejection of Christianity to gain adulthood is a sign of our failure to show the ways in which Christ's kingdom includes and transforms adulthood for everyone.This is our mission: inviting youth into Christian adulthood. We'll keep working until adulthood is discussed from the pulpit at least as frequently as marriage. We'll keep working until youth groups and Christian schools seek to produce Christian adults. We'll keep working until parents of new adults know that they aren't alone, that the joys of being parents to adults are greater than the dangers, and that Christ is the living hope for all their children. We're inviting youth into Christian adulthood.
