• Our mission is to improve the quality of life of children, individuals and families who are living with a mental illness by providing support, education and advocacy based programs and services. Every day, NAMI Greater Houston works tirelessly to challenge one of the greatest unmet needs in our country: mental illness. Did you know that one in five families in any given year is touched in some way with a serious mental illness? Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders that account for more than 15% of the overall burden of disease from all causes--even more than for all forms of cancer. While mental illnesses have an immense impact on individuals and families, less than half of those who suffer from these disorders seek care. The prevalence of stigma, shame and guilt are the most acknowledged reasons why many people needlessly suffer and are denied full participation in society. For many, mental illness is still a taboo topic, and is an illness that is treated as if it is unrelated to our physical well-being. Mental illness deserves the same compassion, understanding and access to treatment and support in the same manner that is given to other biological illnesses. At NAMI Greater Houston, we work to fully support individuals living with mental illnesses and their families. As such, we advocate to ensure that they are treated respectfully and fairly in all forms of society. We envision a future where there is a well-funded community-based mental health system using proven quality treatments, and where people with mental illness are not heavily represented in the criminal justice system. We also envision a well-informed public that understands that we can change the face of mental illness through support, education and advocacy.
